mermaid blood

I have learned that mountain biking on nearby trails is much less brutal on my heart rate than road riding to work. I was out last night for just shy of 2 hours, and I blasted through the James Street trail, taking it at the most aggressive pace I could sustain.

Stats:
min heartrate: 82
max heartrate: 177
avg heartrate: 148
desc total: 163 m, avg of 7m/min
asc total: 161 m, avg of 4m/min

The ascent rate would have been higher, but I forgot to take some air out of my tires, and I kept sliding across wet roots and rocks 'til I remembered to do it! So- very interesting. Less hill climbing probably accounted for the lower average heart rate. I will endeavour to ride to work again this Friday, and see what my magic watch has to tell me about it.

On the weekend, I bought a fluid indoor trainer, and I set it up last night. Very nice! We switched off Linda's rear knobby for a slick, and it runs very smooth and reasonably quiet. Tonight I will hop on, and run through the one hour training video that came with it. The basic premise seems to be: warm up, kill yourself for a minute, steady pace, kill yourself, steady pace, kill, steady, kill, steady, kill, and so on. The durations vary through warm up, workout, and warm down, and there's lots of incidental advice thrown in by the coach. It even features Alison Sydor. Coooool.

Interesting fact- foo foo is slang for a type of cocaine. I wonder if my msn friend, SlaveForFooFoo knows this?

And now, off for a soul-invigorating swim.
