I'm back from Vancouver, where I found a beautiful apartment and did my best to impress 6 different interviewers for this one position I went for. Despite promises to really start job-hunting, I have only applied to 3 jobs since October. If this works out, accusations of strategic horseshoe placement will be warranted. They put me up in the Hotel Vancouver, which was a much swankier hotel before my ass cruised in there in my usual state of dishevellment and crumpled jeans. I think I may have revelled in my dishevelled more than usual.
You didn't know this, but most of last week was spent hunting for an interview outfit. Yes, shopping ugh. I had quite a bit of help and advice for this endeavour, which I thought would be a couple hours worth of work. Nooo... I finally thought I nailed it when I came home with a cool suit from the French Connection in Toronto, where I was advised to try. The problem in Kate's words: "you look hot, but like a hot guy. I'd go out with you." Um. Good news, but not for those of us hoping to pass as a female interviewee. Ironically, Episode 5 of the L Word was within inches of my reality- Instead, I continued shopping, and eventually suceeded in raising no eyebrows in my interview, and I'm pretty sure I startled no one in the women's bathroom. Hooray!
On the Friday night, still in crumpled jean mode, Erin, Madalene and I were sitting at the bar downstairs when this older, really put together and very rich woman strolls up between us all and opens with, "what better place to get a drink than between a bunch of lesbians?" My mouth dropped, Erin about pissed herself and began musing if she wasn't actually a lot more gay when out in public with me, and the woman wasn't really there to get a drink. Nooo... Eleanor stayed to chat about her gay son, her own flirtation with women, and her past as a nun. I wondered if this wasn't an opening installment of the L Word, and somewhere there were hidden cameras. For the rest of the weekend, any time we passed the bar, Erin obsessively cruised for a second encounter with Eleanor.
Another night, Erin, Madalene, Christiana and I went for a walk along Kits Beach, and it was all water, mountains and illuminated ski-runs, city lights, and gorgeous greenery everywhere. All I could think of was walking there with Kate soon. Dallas would be bounding happily alongside us, probably wondering if the seals would play with her if she swam out to them. I can't wait 'til she tries her first gulp of salt-water.
