We have arrived in Squamish, which means, "Big Wind." We made the long, bumpy, curvey, steep drive from Burnaby to Squamish on Tuesday, passing dynamite blast zone after blast zone as we made our way up the coast.
Once we were set up, bikes secured, and protected against rolling into nearby trailers, we set up our awnings, and looked with satisfaction at our work. Then we crashed into deep afternoon naps, not even bothering to check-in.
We were awakened by a feeling like the airstream being rolled about, with huge creaking and swaying. We discovered that the wind had come up, and we had to stumble around outside bringing in the big awning we had just fought to erect. Once it was away, we dropped right back to sleep- which should tell you how anxious and long our morning of hitching up, driving and getting here was.
It's gorgeous here- we can see the Chief, mountains, drumlins and valleys all around, and the clouds skid across the sky with alacrity. We took Dallas out for some baseball last night, and there is a gorgeous ball-park right by here that has the most incredible back-drop. What a place. I'd never appreciated its beauty, passing through before, since I was so put off by the big-box stores lining highway 99. The best view in town may be from the local WalMart parking lot.
The time has just flown by. This is already week 3 in the trailer, and we've settled into our routines and projects like second-nature. The only thing that amazes me is how little time we have in a day to get things done. We are still handling loose threads, so I suppose in time, we'll have real quiet- but not quite yet.
We have been meeting lots of people- every couple of days we meet old friends or make new ones. Edna and Mark, Frank and Chris, Danny, Christiana and Julia, Katharine and Frances, Susan, Georgie and Tom, ... the list goes on!
We thought we might move from here to Porteau Cove, but I think we're going to stay put where we are, and take in some of what Squamish has to offer. Videos will be forthcoming soon, but they're not quite high-enough on the to-do list yet!
More pics when the sun shines!
