give kind heed to dead men

Ah, the weekend! It felt like Friday on Monday this week, which never bodes well. Despite great plans to bike in to work, I have been getting both progressively later and lazier about how I'm getting in. I used only public transit for 3 weeks, but last week I started driving one day after missing the bus. But the driving thing will not continue- it is too much hassle, not enough time-savings, and it's a bunch of other negative things too. So- biking starts Tuesday, and I'm aiming for at least twice by bike next week, and zero trips in by car.

Some remedial dog-grooming might also be in order. Dallas is now so stinky and dishevelled, she's disgusting herself. I can always tell she's at her limit, because if I say "bath??" she looks up hopefully and wags her tail, despite hating baths with all her heart. Ahh. I've booked her into a groomer, not having the patience to shave her down myself.

Kayaking happened again, with me paddling out to UBC and somewhat beyond. Again I was dogged by seals, popping up near and far around me, but one emerging so suddenly and closely that I yelped- and he was gone before I could think to take a picture. I did take some pics though, and I'll share those. As you head South on English Bay, the mouth of the bay opens up, and I'm imagining the water gets deeper. It was out here that I saw the whale... It was a thrill to glance over and see this massive being come up and feed at the surface, gliding along, mouth open, and then submerge as gracefully as it came. Shortly afterward, the whale surfaced again, and I was full of wonder at being right out there where these great creatures live. Impressed as I was, I also moved a little closer to shore... but not before I saw what I think was a shark fin- but hard to tell, because it was a ways out. Hmm... big water, big hungry things.

Baseball practice was inexplicably cancelled today, and all my morning rushing around has resulted in a very productive day. Lots of laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, and general organizing. Every month or so, it feels really good to get things done around the house.
