surrounded by cucumbers

The garden is getting a little frightening.  Yesterday I brought home 6 giant zucchini, a pail full of green beans, another ballcap full of snowpeas, another bucket of spinach, four large beets, a half dozen carrots, and 15 cucumbers.  Neighbours have taken to avoiding us as we trek back from the garden, fully laden, and looking for anyone to lighten our load.  We have 6 rows of cucumbers, and the party is just getting started.  We may have to move away...

Work has been very slow lately, but it looks like things will start again mid-August, and I suspect I will not have much spare time after that.  I have a sense of calm before the storm.  It would be a good time to get away, but Kate's committed at her full-time job, and web contracts keep coming up too.  And then there's Mabel.

The latest with the Mabel-meister is that there is still no consensus on what's wrong.  We dumped a whole container of Stanodyne into 1/2 a tank of fuel, and it made quite a difference to how quietly the truck runs.  The engine light switches off intermittently, but so far, always comes back on.  Hmm.  The new diesel guru we're talking to believes it can't be the fuel-injection pump (but the even newer guy at KW Fuel Injection thinks it very likely is...), and must either be dirty fuel/fuel injectors or an air leak somewhere.  And so, despite occaisional stalls and crazy idling behaviour, the advice continues to be that we should keep driving Mabel until either the injectors are cleaned out, or the fuel pump clearly quits.   Needless to say, we have to travel with cell phone and CAA card at all times, never quite knowing what might happen.  I am not amused, but then again, every day I can avoid spending thousands of dollars on a fix is just fine.

In other news, I am still appalled at the iPhone plans.  I was in to a Rogers store yesterday paying a bill (we use their rocket-stick 3G thing), and thought I'd remind myself how bad the deals were.  I had to walk away shaking my head.  Chalk up another $100/month bill just for not near enough minutes, and probably not enough data either.  And do this for 3 years...  not.   Let's see what the new iTouch brings, and/or look more seriously into jailbreaking.

Ok, and a very sobering video for those of us who liked to trot the kayak out on the ocean at all points while out West-  this video pretty well covers my second greatest fear while out there in the middle of vast ocean expanses-

(start the video at 2 minutes, but the real action starts around the 5 minute mark.  I watched with my heart in my stomach!
