Yesterday, as I was coming through Conestogo, I saw a golden retriever walking beside its owner, with a bright yellow bird perched on its back. They all crossed in front of me, with dog's tail wagging happily, owner smiling, and budgie looking around non-chalantly. Scenes like this make me pause and wonder at what the bird and dog are doing right and what I'm doing wrong, as I race the rest of the way into work.
Then the motorcycle guy- Dude went by with the black bike, black leather jacket, black helment, black shades and skull & bones face mask. A moment later, I passed a father and son standing at their mailbox, staring at the receding biker with mouths wide open.
Then the bicyclist. Guy right out of Triplets of Belleville, with crazy leg muscles and sinews, walking his pricey road bike in the dust. I no sooner turned around to offer him a ride into Waterloo, when his wife pulled up to do the same. I was off the hook.
It does seem that April is the cruellest month, breeding little genuine news for our dead and dying blogs. Everyone I know is going long weeks between postings, and then coming up with minutia like the crap above. Unless of course you have just quit your job, and then you can fill page after hopeful page with news and views of the future. For those left behind though- the uphill struggle continues to find and report consequential stories.
Tonight I'm finally succumbing to the pressure to do "Steve's trail," found in no ride-guide, advocated by no one except those stupefied by the endless uphill grind and death-defying downhill immediately after the crest. What will I find? A little bunny hill or some monstrosity that will bring the biking hoardes to his doorstep? Stay tuned! More scintillating news tomorrow!
